Macquarie University is on track to becoming one of Australia's leading research universities; it has ambitious plans to be among the top eight in Australia and one of the top 200 in the world by 2014. The university is home to some of the world’s preeminent researchers and attracts significant research funding, ranked fifth nationally based on funding, size and success rate per application. In 2009, it expanded its research capabilities through recruitment of 100 additional research staff in identified ‘concentrations of research excellence’, (COREs).
The COREs provide world-class research environments and help develop the university’s international profile. In addition, with the opening of the Macquarie University Hospital in 2010, there will be new opportunities for collaborative research projects with industry.
Medical science research
Macquarie’s Neuroscience, Vascular Sciences and Surgery team conducts research into the effects of the brain on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems; and also the effects of the cardiovascular system upon the brain. Macquarie’s current multidisciplinary team of researchers includes neuroscientists, biomedical engineers, cardiovascular specialists and surgeons. Our scope of applications is translational, from molecular biology to the bedside and operating room. Their objective is to advance knowledge in neurovascular sciences and to train graduates in specialist surgery and medicine.
Technology research
Researchers in the university’s Photonics Research Centre address fundamental questions and develop new optical technologies useful for applications such as medical diagnosis and therapy, high-resolution imaging and sensing, and micro-fabrication. The university is building a unique and cross-disciplinary team to forge innovative discoveries in quantum science and technology, which will open up new exciting routes for interdisciplinary research.
In addition, the university undertakes complementary research activities related to wireless communications, which range from transistor circuits for radios, through to issues related to telecommunications networking, digital signal processing and transmission via optical and radio propagation. This area has naturally expanded into engineering where Macquarie has concentrated its effort on a sound base of research in optics, electronics, computing and body area networks.

Future Materials is a national network in which our founding partners include some of Australia's leading universities. Worldwide experience has shown that advances in materials technology often provide a real competitive advantage for many of today’s manufacturing industries. However, many companies miss out on opportunities for advancement because they simply don’t have the structures and people in place to monitor the many rapidly evolving technologies available.
Future Materials can provide Australian companies with access to scientific equipment and personnel experienced in: Materials characterisation and evolution
- Problem solving, such as investigating contaminants and materials failures
- Studies and testing on coatings, thin films and surface modifications
- Collaborative research aiding the development of new products and processes.
Future Materials can help you solve your materials problems. A call to Future Materials could see your “possible” competitive advantage become a reality.
