Peter C. Farrell, PhD, DSc, AM founded ResMed in 1989, and was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company from 1989 until 2008 and now has the role of Executive Chairman.
ResMed is a leading developer, manufacturer, and distributor of medical devices and mask interfaces for treating, diagnosing and managing sleep-disordered breathing and other respiratory disorders. It is listed on both the New York and Australian Stock Exchanges with the symbol RMD.
For the quarter ending 30 September 2009, revenues were US$247 million representing a 16% increase, on a constant currency basis, over the previous corresponding period. Net income of US$42 million was a 50% increase. This was the 59th consecutive quarter with record year-on-year increases in both revenues and income. In the year ending 30 June, 2009, ResMed had revenues of US$921 million and net profit after tax of US$146 million. Revenues were up 15% in constant currency while net profit was up 33% over the prior year. ResMed’s current market capitalization is US$3.7 billion.
Dr Farrell has had over 30 years' consulting and executive experience in life sciences. He is a Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering and Australian Institutes of Management and Company Directors. Dr Farrell is incoming Chair of the Executive Council of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves on the Boards of the Jacobs School of Engineering and the Rady Management School and the Health Sciences (Medical School) Advisory Board of the University of California, San Diego. He is also the current President of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.
The Australian Institution of Engineers recognized Dr. Farrell as National Professional Engineer of the Year in 1994 and Biomedical Engineer of the Year in 1997. He was named San Diego Entrepreneur of the Year for Health Sciences in 1998, Australian Entrepreneur of the Year in 2001, and US National Entrepreneur of the Year for Health Sciences for 2005. Dr Farrell was admitted to Membership of the Order of Australia in 2004.
Dr. Farrell holds bachelor and masters degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney (with honors) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology respectively, a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a DSc from the University of NSW. Peter was Foundation Director of the Graduate School for Biomedical Engineering (1978–89) within the University of New South Wales, remains a Visiting Professor at UNSW and is Chairman of UNSW’s Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.
